Lesson Study Immersion Program in Japan [ Nov 29 to Dec 8 2022]

IMPULS (International Math-teacher Professionalization Using Lesson Study) at Tokyo Gakugei University, Explayground Institute, Japan, and Lesson Study Alliance, a non-profit corporation in Chicago, USA, are offering an intensive Lesson Study Immersion Program in Japan in the fall of 2022. The program will run from November 29 (Tuesday) to December 8 (Thursday), 2022.

IMPULS-LSAlliance Lesson Study Immersion Program offers leaders of lesson study a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in authentic mathematics Lesson Study in Japan. Participants will observe several live research lessons, post-lesson discussions, and everyday mathematics lessons in elementary and secondary schools. All research lessons and post-lesson discussions will be simultaneously translated into English by experts in mathematics teaching and learning. In addition, participants will have opportunities to interact with teachers, students, and education professors from schools in Japan. Leading researchers of Lesson Study and mathematics education in Japan, including Profs. Toshiakira Fujii, Tad Watanabe, and Akihiko Takahashi, will lead discussions with the participants before and after each research lesson observation. These discussions provide a deeper understanding of Lesson Study in Japan and the Japanese pedagogical approach of teaching mathematics through problem-solving.

Tuition, $3500 US, includes the cost for the accommodations with breakfast and local transportation during the program. Participants will be responsible for their own international airfare to Tokyo and local transportation between the airport and the hotel in Tokyo reserved for the program.

We can accept only a limited number of participants due to the constraints of live research lesson observation.

Interested individuals should complete the following application form by May 1, 2022, along with a non-refundable 50 USD application fee.
